Nicole Westmarland is a Professor of Criminology and teaches on the BA Criminology and MSc Criminology and Criminal Justice. She is Director of the Durham University Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse (CRiVA).

 

She has a BSc in Psychology and Women’s Studies (University of Teesside), MA in Women’s Studies (University of York) a PhD in Social Policy and Social Work (University of York). 

 

Nicole is widely known for being an academic activist in the area of male violence against women. She is committed to doing research is used to inform both policy and practice. Her career to date has been reflective of this, with work with grassroots violence against women groups informing and being informed by her academic research. She has sat on a number of governmental and non-governmental advisory committees and chaired Rape Crisis (England and Wales) for five years.

She is often in the news as a commentator on violence against women and writes for popular as well as academic audiences.
