Nicole Westmarland lectures on the BA Criminology and is admissions tutor for the Sociology and Criminology degrees. She has a BSc in Psychology and Women’s Studies (University of Teesside), MA in Women’s Studies (University of York) a PhD in Social Policy and Social Work (University of York). Nicole is a Wolfson Fellow and a member of the Crime, Violence and Abuse research group.

Nicole is widely known for being an academic activist in the area of male violence against women. She is committed to doing research is used to inform both policy and practice. Her career to date has been reflective of this, with work with grassroots violence against women groups informing and being informed by her academic research. She sits on a number of governmental and non-governmental advisory committees.

Current research projects are funded by Government Office North East, Northern Rock Foundation and Respect (see links below). She is often in the news as a commentator on violence against women and writes for popular as well as academic audiences. Nicole’s forthcoming book - Violence Against Women - will be published by Willan in 2010. She is also working on a new edited collection, 'International Approaches to Rape', with Geetanjali Gangoli (Bristol University) which will be published by Policy Press in 2010.
